  • 🚀 Mastering Communication: The 7 C's for Tech Leaders! 📱💬

So many people get derailed because they don't follow a communication framework.. I've been a tech leader for 10+ years and I've realized that effective communication plays a vital role in achieving success on a day to day basis. Last week, I spoke a lot about effective communication and today, let me show you what I do.. So what do I use? I've come to lean on the "7 C's of Communication" as they can significantly enhance my leadership outcomes through communication alone and that's something I can control! Now to be clear.. I dont follow these 100% of the time and I don't hit all of them on every message but I definitely use a couple every time. Clarity: I make sure to clearly define project/task objectives and expectations to prevent any misinterpretations. I will document these expectations across the different channels we have (verbal, written) and have clear action items as next steps. Keep the technical jargon to a minumum. Conciseness: I make sure to keep my notes/chats/requests brief and focused on essential metrics and items that need the attention. A long winded message leads to lost focus - don't give too much detail, they can always ask for more. Concreteness: I support my ideas and proposals with specific examples and data for credibility but I tie it back to business objectives, goals or return on investment. We still need "gut" or "intuition" for decisions but good leaders add in data to help back their argument. Correctness: I ensure accuracy in all documentation and communications. The worst thing is having a wrong fact or incorrect number ruin an otherwise great idea or communication, especially as the "tech person". Instant loss of credibility in that moment Coherence: I ensure to structure communication logically to guide stakeholders through a cohesive narrative. Last week - I talked about "Know your Audience" - this is a big part of that! Storytelling is key to getting buy-in. Completeness: I provide comprehensive information in project briefs to ensure that all details are available IF they want to look into it. Don't leave out relevant details or leave facts that matter out of the communication, no hiding. Courtesy: I make sure to foster a culture of respect and open communication within your team. I believe that open, transparent communication leads to trust. Focus on making sure to build that trust. Implementing these communication principles will hopefully help you become seen as a better communicator in your organisation! ✍️ Did I get this wrong or right? ♻️ Reshare if this applies to you! #TechLeadership #CommunicationSkills #LeadershipDevelopment

  • Mastering Tech Leadership: Connecting with Your Audience for Impact!

Effective communication is a critical skill for tech managers, especially when it comes to delivering presentations. I’ve been in countless presentations where the audience checks out before we even start talking. So, I’m here to help you forge that connection with your audience right from the outset and keep it strong until the end. 🎤👀 In this blog post, we’ll explore why “getting to the point” is paramount in presentations for tech managers. We’ll also discuss common pitfalls to avoid and provide practical tips to help you craft your next deck. 🚀📊 Oh, and guess what? I’ll even throw in a template that you can copy and use immediately for your next presentation. It’s guaranteed to work! 🎁✨ Now, let’s dive in. Why does this matter? 🤔 As a tech manager, your ability to communicate clearly directly impacts your team’s success, project outcomes, and ultimately the value you bring to your company. Clear presentations not only help you get what you want but also foster alignment, motivation, and drive toward tangible results. 🌟👩‍💻 In the tech environment, where complex concepts and technical jargon abound, clarity becomes even more crucial. Your audience will come from diverse backgrounds, with varying levels of technical expertise (and most likely, they won’t know anything about what you’re talking about). Clear communication bridges these gaps, enabling everyone to grasp your message, follow your instructions, and provide the support you need. 🌐🔍 Moreover, as a tech manager, you often serve as a liaison between technical and non-technical stakeholders. Your presentations must strike a balance between depth and simplicity, ensuring that both audiences comprehend the information and are aligned with the project’s objectives. 🤝📈 What Gets Missed? As tech managers, we grapple with several challenges when it comes to maintaining clarity in presentations. The BIGGEST common pitfall is the temptation to dive too deeply into technical details, assuming that everyone shares the same level of expertise. Unless your audience explicitly craves this level of detail (which, let’s face it, they rarely do), this approach can alienate non-technical stakeholders and overwhelm them with unnecessary information. 🙈🔍 Another pitfall we often overlook is the importance of storytelling in presentations. While we, as tech managers, may be inclined to focus solely on data and facts, incorporating narratives and real-world examples can supercharge engagement, boost retention, and win buy-in from the audience—and that’s precisely what we need! 📖🌟 Tips to Shorten This Process: Know Your Audience: Understand the backgrounds and levels of expertise within your audience. Tailor your message accordingly, using language and examples that resonate with both technical and non-technical stakeholders. When in doubt, err on the side of non-technical—always! 🎯🗣️ Focus on the Big Picture: Distill complex technical concepts into high-level insights and actionable takeaways. Highlight the relevance and impact of your message on the project’s objectives and company goals. 🌐🚀 Structure Your Presentation: Create a clear and logical flow for your presentation. Outline key points and transitions between topics. Use headings, bullet points, and visuals to enhance readability and comprehension. (Check out my template below!) 📊📝 Visualize Complex Concepts: Leverage diagrams, charts, and visuals to illustrate technical concepts and relationships. Visual aids can simplify complex information and facilitate understanding across diverse audiences. 📈🔍 Practice and Refine: Rehearse your presentation multiple times to ensure clarity, coherence, and conciseness. Solicit feedback from colleagues or mentors and incorporate their suggestions to amplify the effectiveness of your communication. 🔄🎙️ In a nutshell, nailing communication during presentations is crucial for tech managers like us. It’s our chance to inspire, align, and drive results within our teams and across the organization. By being aware of common pitfalls and applying practical tips tailored to our tech environment, we can level up our presentation game and make a meaningful impact as leaders in the tech industry. 🚀👩‍💻 So where's my free template?

  • Innovation is the outcome of habit, not a random act

"Innovation is the outcome of habit, not a random act" - Sukant Ratnakar Except, in tech/data/analytics, we never develop habits to work on our soft skills but rather focus on how many hours we've spent coding this week or which certifications we can tackle next. The reality is - developing those soft skills needed to advance your career need to be a part of your daily "habits" and in the long term, they will pay off - especially if you want to be a people leader in tech! ✍️ What have you done this week to build those habits? ♻️ Reshare if you think someone in your network needs to see this! #TechLeadership #LeadershipDevelopment

  • I've sat through countless 60+ slide presentations and every time, they didn't go well

and then, we we left the room - the presenter is confused as to why their stakeholders aren't more excited to take action or make the decisions they felt needed to be made. and it's all the presenters fault! They didn't know their audience... So I've created this template to share with everyone to help show how I do it - the "5 Slides Max" template: Overview Identifying the Problem Presenting Solutions or Options The "Flexible" slide Outlining Next Steps and why you need them! 5 slides maximum to get all of your information across - use this framework and watch your audience be more engaged and leave with clear actionable next steps. • Understand. Your. Audience.

Dreaming of not only solving codes but also leading the way? It's all about connecting with the individual. A valuable lesson that has been transformative for me and could be for you too: Understand. Your. Audience. Why? Because when you do, incredible things happen. You're not just a technology expert; you evolve into a technology leader that others admire. Why has this worked for me? 1. Speak Their Language: Have you ever tried to explain a complicated tech idea to someone outside of our field? It's challenging, isn't it? Now, picture it the other way around. Discover what motivates them, how they speak/listen/learn, and communicate in a manner that resonates with them. You'll connect at a level you never have before 2. Tailor Your Ideas: Just like adjusting a model, tailor your vision to suit your audience's requirements. A one-size-fits-all approach doesn't work in technology or leadership. By tailoring my idea to make sure I addressed their biggest issues (whether the idea changed or not) has allowed me to get way more done. 3. Grow with Feedback: The beauty of understanding your audience? The feedback you receive. It's like having the secret codes to advance quickly - both in your projects and your leadership abilities. Seek feedback, understand their way of working and make sure you showcase that you are learning from it - people want to see progress. This year, my goal is not only to mentor but also to encourage you to delve deep into comprehending your people - whether it's your development team, your users, or your stakeholders. Because when you do, you'll realize that leadership isn't just about being in charge; it's about guiding your team to greater heights, collectively. Are you prepared to transition from being tech-savvy to a tech-savvy leader? Let's make 2024 the year we achieve just that. I'm here to help you - reach out! #LeadershipInTechnology #UnderstandingYourAudience #TransformativeChanges #LeadershipDevelopment
